Soča Valley

The route

Kranjska Gora → Vršič Pass → Trenta/Soča Valley → Bovec → Kobarid → Tolmin → Nova Gorica

Full Route: https://maps.app.goo.gl/SRmE77VBhzfzWmFn8

Personally my favourite part of Slovenia and should not be missed if you have the time!! It’s a big day so make sure to start early (in Slovenian time this means 7.00-8.00 packed and in the car).

Start in Kranjska Gora

Make a 15 minute stop at Lake Jasna just outside town. It's an easy first photo stop before climbing toward Vršič, ideally you already spent more time here the day before, don’t get distracted.

Drive over Vršič Pass

This is one of the best parts of the entire journey.

Don't treat it as simply a transfer - stop at some of the viewpoints and enjoy the bends. The pass reaches 1,611 m and the road has around 50 hairpin bends. While comfortably driving, keep thinking that there is an event where people drive retro PONY bikes up the pass in Redbull Goni Pony every year. No gears on this tiny bike with tiny wheels.

Worth stopping for:

  • Vršič summit
  • Mountain viewpoints
  • Russian Chapel

Descend into the Soča Valley

This is where the scenery changes dramatically. You'll descend toward Trenta, following the upper Soča toward its source. I'd make a short stop around the Soča spring. Not the most impressive sight out there but it gives a good story to the day – you’ll be following this river all day! And then continue downstream.

Great Soča Gorge

This is one of the places I'd definitely not skip. The river gets the crazy blue color Soča is known for, squeezed between enormous limestone walls. Give yourself roughly 30–45 minutes to walk around, take photos and get down to the river. If you're feeling brave, this is also where you can get your first swim of the ridiculously cold Soča water. Wim Hof anyone?

Boka Waterfall

Continue toward Bovec and stop to look at Boka Waterfall. Don't spend ages here, it takes forever to get closer and you don’t see much more than from the road.

Bovec: ADRENALINE TIME

This is where I'd put your main activity. My pick: Canyoning on the Soča

I’d recommend Sušec Canyon for casuals or people short on time or Fratarica if you live for the thrill. It takes a couple of hours so it should fit neatly into the itinerary without eating the whole afternoon. Important: book the activity in advance and work your itinerary around the operator's departure time. If the times are weird, maybe consider staying an extra day in Bovec. You won’t run out of things to do. The Soča Valley is basically an outdoor-adventure playground. This includes rafting, kayaking, canyoning, ziplining, paragliding, skydiving, climbing, caving, bungee jumping, adventure parks and numerous other activities.

Bovec: LUNCH TIME

Look, ideally you do it the Laura-Miha way and pack sandwiches to optimize your time. But if you haven’t (for reasons we will not judge you for) then you can have a quick lunch in Bovec. But don’t dilly-dally, there's much to do yet!

Kobarid & the Soča

I'd choose one of these:

  • Kozjak Waterfall: Short hike to one of the valley's most photogenic waterfalls.
  • Napoleon Bridge: A spectacular historic bridge over the Soča and a great place for photos.
  • Just explore the river: Nice viewpoint (https://maps.app.goo.gl/2yryGvAffYm4LR6C6), but there are many more around

Tolmin

Continue south through the valley. If you want another quick nature stop, the confluence of the Soča and Tolminka near Tolmin is particularly nice (Sotočje). Fantastic swim spot too!! Or choose Most na Soči for another cool swim spot.

If you're moving quickly, you could visit Tolmin Gorge, but I wouldn't try to squeeze in the full gorge experience after such a long day. It used to be free but now there’s a parking and entrance fee.

Drive to Nova Gorica

Continue down the Soča Valley toward Nova Gorica. Don’t miss Kanal ob Soči. You'll notice the landscape changing from Alpine mountains to vineyards and a much more Mediterranean feel.

Nova Gorica

Check out the Solkan Bridge – people do Bungee Jumping from there and the engineering behind it is crazy. Finish with dinner/drinks in Nova Gorica. Not too much to see there unless you’re into casinos – it’s the Vegas of Slovenia for rich Italians. You can stay there for the night or drive back to Ljubljana but don’t underestimate how long this day will be.

What next?

Do the cave+coast day trip or the Kranjska Gora day trip if you invert this itinerary. Or take the train (YES, YOUR CAR GOES ON THE TRAIN) to Bohinj. More about that here and continue on the Bled/Bohinj itinerary.

Alternatively, explore the Slovenian wine region (Goriška Brda, Vipavska dolina) or Miramare near Trieste or even go to Venice the next day.  Hikers can climb Nanos for a good view of the region.

Happy travels!
